Air conditioners rarely fail without warning. Most of the time, there are signs for days or even weeks before a system quits completely — the trouble is that they're easy to write off as "probably nothing" until the day it's 95 degrees outside and the air coming out of your vents is room temperature.

Here are five signs worth paying attention to, and what each one usually means.

1. Warm air from the vents

This is the most obvious sign, but it's worth starting here because the cause isn't always the same. Warm air can mean a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, a dirty condenser coil, or something as simple as a tripped breaker or a thermostat set incorrectly. Before assuming the worst, check that the thermostat is set to "cool" and below the current room temperature, and check your breaker panel for a tripped switch.

2. Weak or inconsistent airflow

If some rooms are cooling fine and others aren't, or if airflow feels weak throughout the house, the issue is often a clogged air filter restricting airflow, or in some cases a failing blower motor or a duct problem. A dirty filter is the easiest thing to rule out first — if it's been more than 60–90 days since it was changed, that's the place to start.

If your AC is turning on and off in short bursts rather than running a full cooling cycle, it's working harder than it should and wearing down faster. A system that's losing efficiency will often run longer to hit the same temperature, and that shows up on your utility bill before it shows up as an obvious performance problem. If your bill has crept up and nothing else about your usage has changed, it's worth having the system looked at before it becomes a bigger repair.
